Dr. Valerie Buan

Dr. Valerie Buan is a highly trained Physical Therapist clinically practicing in both Nevada and California. She earned her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology at the University of Southern California where she was a Dean’s List and a USC Kinesiology Departmental Scholarship recipient. It was then when Dr. Valerie was enamored with human anatomy and biomechanics as well as learning and memory. This fostered her appreciation for the intricate relationship of the mind and body and the interplay between the two in response to healing and recovery. She went on to earn her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Columbia University where she graduated with honors distinction and specialized in both adult neurological and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation while maintaining a keen appreciation for orthopedic and sports recovery. Dr. Valerie’s versatile breadth of clinical experience includes hospital based acute rehabilitation, clinical outpatient orthopedic sports and performing arts rehab, and community based wellness programs. Dr. Valerie also holds a deep interest in teaching, and has assisted in instructing courses and lectured on topics in human anatomy, biomechanics, and neuro-rehabilitation in both academic and clinical settings. She values a patient-centered approach that integrates evidence-based practices, the intuitive art of individualized care, and education to provide the opportunity for individuals to be active participates in their healing in a nurturing environment. Release.

Dr. Valerie was introduced to John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Technique attending a JFB MFR course, where she learned about the ubiquitous role of the fascial system within our body. JFB MFR explains that it is within the fascial system that all of our body’s structures are housed and therefore impacts every movement in our body. Learning about the power of tissue memory housed with the fascial system in response to trauma and the use of JFB MFR to facilitate true mind-body healing, Dr. Valerie’s interest was sparked. She dove deeper into honing her craft and committed over 300 hours of JFB MFR seminars within her first year, and remains dedicated to taking courses annually. Through JFB MFR Dr. Valerie has experienced true mind-body healing from the longstanding impact on her own physical body brought on by years of being a multi-sport competitive athlete and suffering from a debilitating back injury. Dr. Valerie encourages individuals to be open to the powerful work that is JFB MFR. Allow yourself the permission to experience the healing that is possible, and let us at Body Resonance support you in your journey with the utmost empathy and compassion.

Dr. Valerie grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and she loves the So. Cal sunshine. She acknowledges that one’s healing journey includes the importance of self-care. Things she enjoys to invigorate her inner self include backpacking and day hikes, crochet, road biking, art museums, spending quality time with people she loves, cuddling her two pugs, eating chocolate peanut butter cups, and staying passionate about learning.

In addition to being a JFB MFR Advanced Clinician, Dr. Valerie is also a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) and holds a certification in the Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation and Habilitation (NEURO-IFRAH) approach. She is also in training to be a wilderness first responder.

Opinions About Us

I have two children who are polar opposites of each other. One is mellow, and the other is quite spirited. At the end of the day, one thing is for sure. MFR helps quiet their soul and unwind their minds. I've seen them go from uptight or high-strung to a much-needed calm within minutes just by a gentle rocking motion. This method is not just for adults, but for children as well.

A dancer has a high tolerance for pain and sometimes we allow that to go numb just to get through the movements. What I love about receiving MFR as a dancer is being able to move my body without the pain and restrictions I built up while training. The greater range of motion and effortless freedom to move has helped me to continue my training and enjoy a longer career with dance.
